In order to prepare for the 37th Vytal Tournament, Cain Masterson returned to Mistral. From there he went to Mane Island, the location of his rite of passage and sacred ground of the Mastersons. It was his desire to rediscover the survivalist instincts he possess during the two years he spent in solitude on the island among its Grimm inhabitants.

Five nights later, Cain suffered a mortal wound as he was hunted by a pack of Beowolves. As he bled out he felt something take hold of him. The Savage State had awoken. He killed the pack in his primal frenzy, and his rage drew in the other Grimm on the island. The events of that night began a cycle that would continued for the remainder of his stay. At night, Cain would change into the Savage State and kill the Grimm that had spawned from the underground pits during the day. By the morning, those Grimm that survived the massacre the previous night would forever keep their distance from Cain in fear of the monster he would become.
