Literature Text

Somewhere in the Seireitei. Soul Society. 1,002 years prior to Aizen Incident.

Long ago, Ranma had learned that his True Shikai functioned with heat converted energy gathered by the Netsukoukani on his body. Once the energy was used up he would revert to his normal Shikai. This time it was different. He was fully Hollowfied while in his True Shikai state and with the heat converted energy gone he was trapped kneeling in his hulking form. All of Ranma’s attempts to move his petrified Hollow body were unsuccessful. It was then that he began to feel the temperature around him to rise. Although he could not see it Ranma knew what was coming. This was his last chance to stop his teacher and save everyone.

The flames of Ryujin Jakka that were spread across the area began to make their way back to Genryusai’s Zanpakuto. As the fire returned to the blade the air grew unnaturally hot as the air throughout the Seireitei became bone dry. The blade had become scorched black and steam rolled off its edge. “Zanka no Tachi,” Genryusai said. “With this your treason will meet its end.” He raised his Zanpakuto ready to strike down on Ranma.

“Stay your blade Genryusai!” a voice called. Jumping off a wall and landing next to Kosame was her father, Lord Shihoin. He was wearing a golden Kozane armor and carrying a three-bladed pole arm. On his back flew a banner carrying the crest of the Shihoin Clan. The old man looked down at his daughter with satisfaction knowing that she was safe. “Enough of this madness,” he said.

“So you came, Yasha,” Genryusai said. “And you brought the Tenshiheiso to aid you.” He touched the tip of his scorched Zanpakuto on the ground. The tip made a gash in the tile and it slowly turned to molten stone.  “You would use such a powerful tool to aid a man that has sullied your family name? What do you hope to accomplish through all this?”

Lord Shihoin glared at Genryusai. “I would ask you the same thing,” he said. “What you’re doing is wrong and you know it. Why should he die for being different? He was going to tell you about his powers like he did me years ago. After using them to save your life he thought you would understand and accept it. He waited, but you did not come. Instead he was convicted of a treason he did not commit. You were the closest thing to a true father he ever had, and you stood by and let this happen. Now you risk destroying the Soul Society to kill an innocent man. You have no honor and no shame. All you have is your pride. Pride in your loyalty, pride in your power, and pride in your false sense of justice.”

Genryusai hesitated for a moment after hearing Lord Shihoin’s words. He pushed them aside reminding himself that he still had a duty to fulfill. “I follow the will of Central 46, the will of the Soul King,” he stated. “If they decree his death than it shall be so. Say as you wish about me Yasha. It will not change that you and everyone that you and everyone sided with you this day will share the same fate as this demon.” Finished Genryusai readied his Zanpakuto and swung it down at Ranma, but his blade was stopped. The screams of Kosame and her father were blocked from his mind as his senses tried to comprehend the impossibility he was seeing. The large Hollowfied hand of Ranma Kurogami was grasped around the blade of his Bankai.

Ranma had managed to gather enough heat with the Netsukoukani to move his left arm and catch Genryusai’s Zanpakuto. To protect his body from the effect of the Bankai, Ranma focused both the Saaji Kooto of his True Shikai and his spirit pressure into his left hand creating a protective glove. The Netsukoukani continued to absorb the heat from the air and from Genryusai’s blade. Ranma slowly began to stand while his hand was still wrapped around the scorched Zanpakuto.

Unable to fathom why Ranma hadn’t burst into flames, Genryusai watched as the scorch marks on his Bankai began to fade. “What’s happening?” he shouted. “No!” It was then that he noticed a white glow coming from the scars on the back of Ranma’s hands. The white glow on each hand began to move up the scars on his arms and move over his chest meeting at the center. A white hot ball of spirit energy formed at Ranma’s chest with electricity pulsating around it. Genryusai felt as it grew hotter and hotter until it had reached a temperature that was greater than his Bankai. The scorch marks on his blade had completely disappeared as his Zanpakuto was reverted back to its sealed form. He fearfully let go of his blade and dodge the fiery white Cero from his chest. It had melted through numerous walls without signs of stopping and burnt into the ground. When the attack was finished all that was left in the Cero’s path was white hot magma.

Ranma, still holding the sealed Zanpakuto, looked at Genryusai. Squeezing his left hand the blade shattered into many pieces and fell to the ground. He walked toward Genryusai who was stepping back in response to Ranma’s advance. Ranma’s walk became a run as he charged with his right blade only to stop centimeters from his neck. There was a moment of silence. “Are you feeling it?” Ranma asked. “The same helplessness our comrades felt when you killed them with your power. Know that I will never use my power to kill a comrade.” Ranma’s mask shattered revealing his scarred face that was as pale as the rest of his Hollow body. The pieces of his mask filled the hole in his chest and his body returned to normal. He grabbed Genryusai by the neck with his right blade still against it.”I want you to remember this day Yamamoto Sensei for the centuries to come. I want you to remember the people you betrayed, and I want you to remember the man who beat you.”  Ranma let go of his neck and snapped his fingers erecting a barrier around Genryusai. “That should heal your wounds and restore your arm. It will collapse when it’s done.” He snapped his fingers again and the barrier around Kosame fell. Ranma called his left blade to his hand and returned his Zanpakuto to its sealed state. “Send men after me or my family, and I’ll come back for you," he said as his body tuned to black wispy smoke and disappeared.

Genryusai fell to his and glanced around at the warzone created by him and Ranma. He saw the molten stone created by the white Cero that had yet to cool. He saw the shattered blade of his Zanpakuto that stood no chance against his former student. He saw Kosame Shihoin crying in her father’s arms. And finally, he saw his left arm return anew after being severe and destroyed. All this damage and Ranma did not kill a single person. “Well Ranma Kurogami…” Genryusai said with a tear running down his face. “I guess I was the demon all along.”
